To my Mountain Dew loving Mum

One of the problems I have being from England but being stationed overseas with the American military is ordering certain things via the internet. I tried to order flowers to be delivered to my Mum on her birthday BUT if you have ever tried ordering for delivery on a UK site, selecting the US as your country and then typing in an APO address for the billing address- you will know if is impossible! I lost count of the different websites that tried to order from.

I am pretty sure at least I can be held accountable for at least one quater of the grey hairs my Mum may (or may not) have, and I know I was a big pain in the bum (at times) when I was growing up, but I know if I needed my Mum, she was there for me.

Two weeks after having my son, my Mum was here, allowing us to have extra sleep and changing some of those stinky first nappies! which was very much appreciated!!!

so…

Presenting… Robert Alan

If you have had a photo session with me recently or if you follow my blog you would have known I was pregnant. 9 months flew by and I am now a Mummy.

My birth went exactly to plan, I could not have been more happier with it. (my plan)  I am 100% sure that my positive attitude about pain, my husband, my doula and the awesome staff at Landsthul Regional Medical Hospital and listening to a hypnotherapy birth CD every day for the last few weeks of my pregnancy equated to my awesome labour and delivery!

Most of my birth pictures show me smiling though the pushing stage!

I am a first time Mum, I was fully expecting my labour to last a looooong time, I prepared different activities that would help keep my mind off the pain. I think I had a couple of contractions- really mild Thursday March 1st, and a couple more in the afternoon. I actually thought they were braxton hicks contractions as I had not had any up to this point.

I was super hungry and craving steak so I asked my husband to get steak from the commissary so we could cook out on our grill. I made mashed potatoes and veggies during this time I had four or five contractions, they didn’t hurt and I was pretty sure I was either going into very early labour or it was false labour, I was not to worried about timing them.

We served up dinner and started watching House (love that show) my husband – Will said I should time my contractions as during dinner I was noticing some regular contractions. It was 8pm. My contractions in one hour ranged from 15 minutes apart to 5 minutes apart. I still thought this was not real labour as my contractions were so varied.

Around 10pm I had a bath, Will at this point was saying he should pack the car, I told him not to be silly, If (and that was a BIG if) I was in labour I would have hours and hours until we needed to go to the hospital. I did not want to go to the hospital and be stuck there though most of my labour.  While in the bath tub I had one strong contraction that lasted 30 seconds and I had to concentrate on not thinking about the pain, the contractions were still really random, none of them lasted a long time, there was no reason for me to think I would need to go to hospital.

After my bath at my husbands request, I called labour and delivery, the contractions were more intense, still random, they ranged from 10 minutes to 3 minutes apart and I could still talk through them, I was using my birthing ball at this point to lean on to make my self more comfortable. I called Leah my doula to let her know what was going on and she said she would head to my house and I called labour and delivery.

Will made me sit on a blanket incase my water broke, I told him not to be silly, so I was leaning on my ball with a blanket under me talking to labour and delivery, talking though my contractions and    they told me, that I could have hours still to go. As the nurse was telling me if my contractions get closer together or if my water breaks, I should call back, I was in the process of telling her I did not plan on coming to the hospital until labour was progressing and my water breaks, there was a POP, and my water broke, I burst out laughing and I am pretty sure the nurse thought I was crazy. She told me I could shower and then make our way to the hospital.

We live about 20 minutes away from the hospital and it was a really foggy night. My poor husband wanted to drive 100mph was restricted by me telling him to drive slowly in the fog. while we were in the car my contractions became very regular and were 2 minutes apart, they felt different to the contractions I had been having (I now know the new feeling was my body naturally pushing) I chose NOT to tell my husband how close together the contractions were.

We got to the hospital, and I was still talking though contractions. It was a BIG surprise when the nurse checked and said… You are ready to push!!! We had only been at the hospital for five minutes, and I think the staff were quite surprised that I was ready. Suddenly it was all go, I was having monitors strapped to me, I was poked with needles (lots of times because my veins were not cooperating, I think every nurse had an attempt at sticking me!)

Two hours after arriving at the hospital (six hours after I started timing contractions) and a crazy itunes play list later on March 2nd 2012 I gave birth to a healthy 7lb 7oz baby boy. We named him Robert Alan.

A Plan For Birth

I plan on having a natural unmedicated birth, I made this decision early in my pregnancy – after years and years of saying if I have a baby I want ALL the drugs.

I came to the decision after thinking about the birth process, I was not inspired by a book or a tv show, I just thought about how women for billions of years have had their babies, and I figured if they can do it, I can do it. I started to look online for help.

There are a lot of reading materials for people who want to have their babies at home with no medicine and no doctors- well Im not that brave- I will take doctors and hospital equipment over over my own home any day, choosing no pain medicine is just fine for now.

I choose a book from amazon, by Ina May Gaskin, titled Ina May’s Guide to Child Birth.

I started to read my new book and thought it sounded crazy, it was about people living on a compound in the 80′s, BUT the more I read it the more it began to make sense. Most women who gave birth at “The Farm” had natural unmedicated labours with no problems, it was not their lifestyle that led to them being able to birth their babies naturally, but it was the support they had from midwives, doula’s family and husbands.

The midwives and doula’s use simple common sense techniques to help the Moms to relax during labour – walking around, limiting exams, massage, breathing and mantra’s. Of course if a woman is able to stand, squat and move around during labour the process will be helped by gravity, how had I not realized that before?

So many TV shows and movies featuring birth scenes show ladies in birth screaming in pain laying flat on their back I automatically assumed that you had to lay down, and you would be in a tremendous amount of pain. Now dont get me wrong, I know labour is going to hurt, I know its going to be the hardest thing I have ever done, but I really believe that with the help and support of the people around me labour will be easier to handle.

I have a few things that are a must do on my birth plan, some of these are for early labour,  some is for later stage labour and some for pushing, I thought I would share a few of my plans with you.

  1. No induction – unless medically necessary
  2. Labour for as long as possible at home in my own environment
  3. Watch Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (favorite movie)
  4. Move around, walk, eat, drink, sleep, change positions frequently
  5. Listen to songs I can sing and dance too (happy endorphins help with pain)
  6. Practice relaxation via hypnobirth CD’s
  7. Believe in myself

If I cant have the birth I want, yes, I will be sad, and yes, I will be disappointed, but right now this is my plan and I am crossing my fingers (not my legs) that I can get though and stick with it.

Got a good positive birth story?  Feel free to tell me about it in the comments section!

How Time Flies!

Last Sunday I reached the “full term” stage of my pregnancy – 37 weeks. Tomorrow I will be 38 weeks pregnant! I cant believe how fast time has flown. The last 9 months have disappeared behind me in a whirlwind of clients, mini vacations with my husband and spending time with friends.

I have been extremely lucky so far with my pregnancy, I had a few scares early on which resulted in two trips to the emergency room (Once at Landsthul, Germany and once at The Royal Surrey, England.) I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which is diet controlled, but it has not caused me problems so far, I even avoided various colds and bugs that my husband brought home-that is until now. So now I am foggy headed and runny nosed, I always think it could be worse though, and I would love to sit and complain, but I cant. Too many people have much scarier and tougher problems to face than a head cold and pricking fingers to test my blood glucose levels everyday.

Just within my photography club, two ladies had premies, and one man’s daughter was in a traffic accident she has two broken wrists, brain swelling as well as other injuries. It puts my little head cold (no matter how yuk I feel) and diet watching into perspective. – I keep those friends in my thoughts.

I am almost caught up with all my editing, my last client should receive their  online gallery information by Monday, My hospital bag is pretty much packed and I am ready when Baby Baine is ready.

I have a doula to help me though my birth, if you dont know what a doula is take a look at her website and testimonials… she is a lovely lady with two boys of her own. Not only is she a doula, but as with most people I know she is a photographer too, so this means both mine and my husbands relatives will get to see good pictures (as well as our iphone pictures) of the freshly born baby Baine. http://nurturingpassagedoula.com/

I have one more page to promote before I get back to cooking my dinner and editing pictures: Raglens Creations, Its a brand new page for business owners….

Lastly two pictures which are a little different from my usual work… from my most recent session:
